PACKING SPECIALIST SAYS “DON’T BELIEVE EVERYTHING YOU HEAR”

TSA Travel Requirements Not as Strict as You Think

Americans who travel by air need to be up to date on the current Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requirements for their safety and convenience while traveling. However, according to Susan Roberts, travel and packing expert, many people are relying on what they have been told by another person and that information can be inaccurate. With all of the recent changes, it is hard for anyone to keep up with all the airline rules but the problem remains that the infrequent traveler doesn’t know where to get the facts.

Susan Roberts is the manager of Sharon Luggage & Gifts’ SouthPark Mall location in Charlotte and she has been giving packing demonstrations for over 10 years. Susan says, “It is actually about once a week that someone walks into the store and tells me that you can no longer lock your luggage. TSA approved locks have been around for over five years now.” This is just one example of the many myths surrounding travel. Another myth is that no liquids are allowed on board an airplane. TSA requirements are that liquids and gels can be carried on in bottles that do not exceed 3oz. However, the bottles must be inside a clear zip top plastic bag that is no larger than one quart; and each traveler can carry only one bag.

Where should one glean his or her travel information? Before each packing demonstration that Susan gives she researches recent changes on the TSA website, tsa.gov and she always suggest that those who attend her demos do the same for themselves. This information and more valuable packing and travel tips are available at http://www.sharonluggage.com/.

Another tip Susan gives at her packing demos is to check luggage weight restrictions with your airline before flying. The TSA does not regulate luggage weight but each airline has its own rules that either limit weight or charge a fee for going over their suggested weight. To find out more visit your airline’s website.

Sharon Luggage & Gifts currently operates out of ten permanent locations including locations in Charlotte, Pineville, Asheville, Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Cary, and Raleigh; all of which offer weekly packing demonstrations. Packing demonstrations are free to the public and they cover TSA changes, how to pack the most in one bag, travel safety and wrinkle free travel.
